Female in Abstraction

Art at WTC - Online Exhibition | Physical Exhibition is available at WTC 3 Lobby Area starting 30 November 2020

Abstract art symbolizes freedom of expression in art. Not only that it rebelled against the previous technical and aesthetic tradition, it also breaks away from the need to represent reality as it is. Instead, these artists acquired the liberation to represent their own inner realities. However, the hall of fame of abstract art, just like many other art styles, were masculine; while it could be argued that the originator of abstract art might be a Swedish female painter named Hilma af Klint.

The convergent evolution towards abstraction is spurred by different forces and influence of the art world. While it could be seen as a movement towards the academization of art and a quest for pure formalism, abstraction could also reflect shifting attraction from the physical world towards the metaphysical. Rather than painting a representation of an object or scenery, abstract painters strive to convey sound, light rays, energies, vibrations; something just as tangible and influential to our daily life yet not visible to the naked eye. By detaching itself from representation, Abstract art becomes a universal language, transcending cultural, generational, and gender boundaries.

This exhibition will feature abstract paintings from female artists, Hannah Shin, Liu Hsin-Ying, Kate Bright, Marisa R. Ng, and Rega Ayundya Putri. Through this exhibition, we are aiming to show the brilliant abstract artworks by female painters.
